Nestled in the heart of Maharashtra, Kagzipura carries the legacy of India’s ancient papermaking artisans, dating back over 700 years. Founded during the reign of the Tughlaq dynasty, Kagzipura was a thriving center for handmade paper production, supplying paper to royal courts, scholars, and artists across the subcontinent.
As the Mughal Empire flourished, so did Kagzipura’s reputation. The village became a hub for the finest handmade paper, used for imperial decrees, Quranic manuscripts, and timeless works of poetry. For centuries, ‘Kagzis’—master craftsmen who perfected this delicate art—produced paper that was sought after by emperors, traders, and intellectuals.
However, with the advent of industrialization, mass-produced paper overshadowed this artisanal craft, pushing traditional papermakers to the brink of extinction. Kagzipura is now on a mission to revive this forgotten heritage, bringing back the age-old techniques that once made this village a name synonymous with excellence in papermaking.
